Events

Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service Celebration

The Acworth MLK Celebration and Day of Service will be held Monday, January 16, 2023. The community is welcome to join us for a light welcome breakfast at 8:30 a.m. at the Roberts School Community and Education Center.  Following the welcome breakfast, the Unity Walk will begin at 9:15 a.m. and leave from the Roberts School and finish at the Acworth Community Center. Our program honoring the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. will take place at 10:00 a.m. in the Tanyard Creek Overlook of the Acworth Community Center.  After the program concludes, we will begin our service project helping an organization in our community.  MLK Day of Service shirts will be for sale at the Acworth Community Center leading up to and on the day of the event.  All proceeds will go towards the Acworth Expanding Horizons and Acworth Achievers programs.  For more information on the Acworth Expanding Horizons and Acworth Achievers programs, please visit www.acworthexpandinghorizons.org

Special Olympics Georgia Polar Plunge

Special Olympics Georgia is proud to present the 14 th Annual Polar Plunge which will be held on Saturday, February 25 th at Cauble Park in Acworth, Georgia, and the plunging will occur between 9:45 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. The Polar Plunge is one of Special Olympics Georgia “coolest” and largest fundraising events through the efforts of the Law Enforcement Torch Run Program (LETR). All proceeds raised go to help provide 26,620 Special Olympics Georgia athletes free year-round sports training. For more information and to register, visit polarplungega.org.


Community Classes

BSD Taekwon-Do

This is a traditional Taekwon-Do class for adults.  Students will learn balance, focus, self-control, and grow their confidence. Traditional skills are designed to promote health, lower stress levels, and develop the whole body without the use of weapons. Come kick, punch, and destress with us so that you can become your best. Saturday mornings 8:45 a.m. – 9:45 a.m. at the Acworth Community Center. www.acworthparksandrecreation.org

BUILD Yoga

Join Marlo from Backbends and Brews in this great fitness class! BUILD is a very dynamic class using yoga postures, plyometrics, hand weights, and calisthenics to BUILD strength, flexibility, balance, and endurance. Marlo donates 20% of class fees to charity! Classes are held on Wednesdays from 9:05am-9:50am. Monthly and drop-in rates are available. www.acworthparksandrecreation.org

Zumba

Zumba fitness combines high-energy Latin music and international rhythms with unique and easy to follow moves and combinations that allow participants to dance away their worries. This effective, exhilarating, and calorie-burning program features exotic rhythms such as salsa, merengue, cumbia, samba, and more! You'll not only have a great time, but you'll experience a great workout as well! All fitness and skill levels are welcome. Tuesdays or Thursdays at the Acworth Community Center from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Monthly and drop-in rates are available. www.acworthparksandrecreation.org

Line Dancing

Learn how to line dance with knowledge, technique, and style all while staying fit! Join Leslie in a fun and friendly atmosphere where no experience is needed and all you need is a smile and your own two feet. Intermediate, beginner, and evening classes meet on Tuesdays in monthly sessions. Additional information and registration are available at www.acworthparksandrecreation.org.

Pickleball Lessons

Pickleball lessons are back at the Acworth Community Center. Lesson times are available on Wednesday and Thursday mornings. All experience levels are welcome. Additional information and registration are available at www.acworthparksandrecreation.org

Bend & Breathe Yoga Class

Wednesdays 8:15am -9:00am

Join Marlo for a 45 min, slow-paced yoga class. This class targets your deep connective tissues, like your fascia, ligaments, joints, and bones. It’s slower and more meditative, giving you space to turn inward and tune into both your mind and the physical sensations of your body. Holding poses for a longer period of time helps you stretch and lengthen those rarely-used tissues while also teaching you how to breathe through discomfort and sit with your thoughts.


Youth Programs

Art Explosion Winter Break Camp

It's time to get those creative juices flowing! Our Art Explosion Camp has a full week of non-stop art projects and activities. Throughout this fun week of camp, we will work with different art styles like fabrics and dyes, watercolors, paper making, paint, clay and more!  We will also go on a fun, art-themed field trip included in your costs! Prepare to roll up your sleeves and create your next masterpiece. Campers are encouraged to dress in clothing ready to get painted, stained and splattered! Camp will take place Monday February 20 through Friday, February 24. Camp hours are 9:00am - 4:00pm and early drop off and late pick up are included in the costs. This camp is open to children ages 6-13. The cost of this camp is $125 for City of Acworth residents and $150 for non-residents. Special Warriors Tae Kwon-Do

Special Warriors Tae Kwon-Do is a great program for the young community with special needs. The traditional skills of Tae Kwon-Do have been adapted to teach focus, balance, hand-eye coordination, and effective self-defense. This class is instructed by Omar Welch who is a third-degree black belt and instructor certified by the United States Tae Kwon-Do Federation. Classes will meet monthly at the Acworth Community Center on Saturdays from 10:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. www.acworthparksandrecreation.org

BSD Tae Kwon-Do

This is a traditional Tae Kwon-Do class for kids. Using proven techniques to teach confidence, self-control, balance and self-defense, certified instructor Omar Welch will help students (ages 6+) sharpen their minds and learn to use their hands and feet to protect themselves and loved ones. Classes meet twice weekly on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Acworth Community Center. www.acworthparksandrecreation.org

Little Dragons Tae Kwon-Do

This class is designed to teach young people (ages 4-7) balance, hand to eye coordination, and self-control using traditional Tae Kwon-Do exercises. Parents are welcome to take the class with their children, but it is not required. This class meets at the Acworth Community Center on Saturdays from 10:45 a.m. to 11:15 a.m. Monthly sessions are available. www.acworthparksandrecreation.org


Athletics

Acworth Adult Winter Basketball League

Entering its fourth season, the adult winter basketball league is not to be missed! Competitive and Recreational divisions run simultaneously every week with a single elimination tournament to finish the season. Tournament semifinals will take place Wednesday, March 22 and tournament finals will take place Thursday, March 23.

$375 per team or $40 for Free Agents.

February 5 - March 23 (no games February 12)

Sundays: 12 PM - 7 PM

Free Agent Day will be held Saturday, January 14 at 4:30 p.m.


Active Adult Programs

Senior Warriors Gentle Movements

Senior Warriors is designed for Acworth's amazing Active Adult (55+) population. Join our instructor, Omar Welch, as we use traditional Korean movements to increase balance, mental focus, and movement. The goal is to help students continue to be the best they can be in all things! Mondays and Wednesdays from 10:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at the Acworth Community Center www.acworthparksandrecreation.org

City of Acworth’s Senior Luncheon

Join us every third Wednesday of the month for the City of Acworth’s Senior Luncheon. Come join us for lunch and Bingo. This program is free to all seniors but you must RSVP to attend. Reservations will be accepted the week prior to the event.

Soles in Motion

Get your steps in with the Soles in Motion Walking Club. Beginning January 4 th , we will meet to walk for 30 to 45 minutes every Wednesday. *No Soles in Motion on Senior Luncheon Days* Location will either be the walking track or Logan Farm park, this will be determined by weather conditions. www.acworthparksandrecreation.org

Cards & Cookies

Join us every other Monday, starting January 9 th at 2pm. Coffee, cookies and some games will be provided. Come make new friends and learn a new game. If you have a favorite game, feel free to bring it and get a game going. Please register online. www.acworthparksandrecreation.org

Breakfast Club

Horizon Gala

Tickets are now on sale for the 2023 Horizon Ability Gala.  The Horizon Ability Gala will be held on Friday, March 3, 2023, at the Tanyard Creek Overlook (Acworth Community Center) and includes a unique fine dining experience, silent auction, live auction, and jazz ensemble. Proceeds from the Gala go directly to the Horizon League and will help us continue to keep registration costs down and offer quality programs. Within the last several years, businesses and residents of Acworth have donated over $300,000 to this cause. Please consider attending the event or donating to the auction. Horizon League Baseball

The Horizon League provides children and adults with cognitive and physical disabilities the opportunity to participate in athletic events, develop lasting relationships among their peers, coaches, and parents, and demonstrate to them that they are an important part of their community by creating an environment of inclusion for both the participants and their families. The League is open to youth and adults ages five and up. Teams are broken up by age groups. Games are non-competitive and each player on the roster gets on base before the opposing team gets to bat.
