A Magical Journey Exploring the Enchanted World of Butterflies

Discover the Joy of Nature, Creativity, and Whimsy at the A Garden With Wings Butterfly Exhibit

Saturday was a whirlwind of FUN for Scarlett and me! We received an invitation to a 4th birthday party at a place we had never been to before, which meant one thing - adventure! We arrived at Smith-Gilbert Gardens at 10 am, ready to embark on an enchanting "fairy garden" experience, as Scarlett liked to call it.

The birthday girl's family went above and beyond to ensure a day filled with wonder for their little princess, who adores butterflies. The children eagerly explored the garden trails, discovering a delightful waterfall where they engaged in water races with leaves. As they frolicked along the paths, they enthusiastically named flowers they encountered, and their imaginations were sparked by incredible sculptures strategically placed throughout the garden. And all of this excitement came before the craft activities!

Our group then gathered at a charming rustic pavilion near the waterfall to engage in crafts. The children proudly adorned themselves with adorable butterfly headbands. There was laughter, singing of Happy Birthday, and storytelling of the beloved Fancy Nancy Bonjour Butterfly book, which brought even more giggles.

Next on the agenda was a visit to the Butterfly Exhibit - an absolute delight! The garden volunteers were incredibly thoughtful, ensuring that the children understood the importance of not touching the delicate wings and encouraging careful observation. As parents, we relished the opportunity to watch our little ones marvel at the magical beauty of these graceful creatures. Personally, I discovered a fascinating fact - butterflies do not consume solid food; they solely rely on liquids for nourishment.

Although it was our first time at the gardens, we are already planning our return. I can only imagine the wonders that await us during the fall and early spring seasons!

Here are a few helpful tips for your visit:

  • Dogs are welcome in the gardens during "Dog Days" at an additional fee, but please keep them on a leash.
  • If you're considering hosting a party at the gardens, note that it operates on a first-come, first-served basis. And you are asked to contact the Gardens in advance. (They are not currently accepting rentals or large groups with vendors, tents or etc.)
  • Be cautious of snakes, especially during this time of year. Scarlett actually spotted one on a rock very close to us!
  • The koi fish in the ponds are quite elderly and add to the charm of the gardens.
  • Don't forget to bring plenty of water to stay hydrated.
  • Bug spray is a wise addition to your packing list.

Make sure to mark your calendar and plan a visit to the A Garden With Wings Butterfly Exhibit at Smith Gilbert Gardens before it concludes on July 31. I promise you won't regret it!
