Twists & Turns: VBS Crafts

From my time teaching first graders at Burnt Hickory Baptist Church

By Stephanie Freeman, Editor & Publisher June 17, 2023

Hey there, fellow adventurers! Gather 'round as I regale you with the thrilling tale of my journey as a first-time VBS Assistant Teacher. Brace yourselves, because this experience was nothing short of amazing, albeit a tad exhausting. Picture this: chaos, traffic, and the cacophony of young voices mingling together like a symphony of excitement. Yep, that was just the first day!

You see, I entered this realm of VBS with a sense of trepidation, unsure of what awaited me. Little did I know that this rollercoaster ride would be filled with twists and turns at every corner. But hey, that's what makes life exciting, right? As the days went by, we found our groove, and boy, did we have a blast! And guess what? We even had one young soul from our class who was saved, adding an extra sprinkle of triumph to our journey.

Now, let me tell you, having 18 energetic first graders in a room is like witnessing a hurricane of chatter. They love to talk, and boy, do they do it loudly! It was a stark contrast to my three-year-old daughter, who, although quite the chatterbox herself, falls more into the realm of "controlled chaos." Plus, being her mom, I can easily put her in her place when needed (or at least try my best).

This year's VBS had a theme that had us all buzzing with excitement: Twists and Turns. And let me tell you, it was as cute as can be! Our classroom transformed into a Candyland wonderland, complete with vibrant posters adorning the walls. Oh, the struggle to keep those posters intact was a daily battle, my friends. But we soldiered on, for the love of our candy-coated theme!

Now, hold on tight, because we're about to enter the sweetest part of this adventure. Throughout this journey, I discovered a deep passion for crafting, bringing the stories to life through arts and crafts. Sure, I took a detour to Pinterest for some inspiration, but I put my own whimsical twist on every creation, all while keeping an eye on my thrifty side. Well, most of the time, because let's face it, every dedicated teacher is willing to splurge a bit for the sake of their students' joy. And boy, was I having a blast!

While I may not have been fully prepared with my own crafts on the first day, I made a triumphant comeback on day two! So, without further ado, let's dive into the magical world of crafts that enchanted us throughout the entire week.

Crafts That Will Ignite Your VBS Adventure!

Day 2: Jesus is Trustworthy

Boats that Float | Share the miraculous story of Jesus walking on water.

Boats that Float by Stephanie Freeman

The Lesson:

Ahoy there, sailors! Get ready for an adventure that will take you on a journey of wonder and awe. We want you to be reminded of the extraordinary tale of Jesus walking on water, and what better way to do that than by creating your very own boats to represent this miraculous feat?

This craft is not just about creating boats, my friends. It's about fostering a deeper connection to the stories and teachings of Jesus. As you engage in this craft, let your hearts be filled with wonder and awe. Imagine the incredible faith it took for Jesus to walk on water, defying the laws of nature. Let this craft serve as a tangible symbol of that miraculous event.

But here's the exciting part, my young ambassadors of faith! We encourage you to proudly share your boats and the accompanying story with your loved ones. Through this act of sharing, you become ambassadors of faith, spreading the joy and lessons you have learned in our class. Your enthusiasm and passion have the power to inspire others to embrace the power of faith and to believe in the miracles that can happen when we trust in Jesus.

So, my friends, as we embark on this craft together, let's ensure that our boats remain afloat but dry, just like the unwavering faith in our hearts. Let your creativity and imagination soar as you create your boats, and let them sail as symbols of miraculous faith.

May this craft be a source of joy, inspiration, and a reminder of the incredible journey we are on as we walk with Jesus. As your boats sail through the waters of your imagination, may they also sail through the hearts of those you share them with, sparking a sense of wonder and a deepening of their own faith.

Get ready to embark on floating adventures, my little sailors! Let your boats carry the spirit of miracles and let your enthusiasm light up the world around you. Together, we'll craft our way through the stories and teachings of Jesus, and let His love guide us on this incredible journey of faith.

Additional Ideas/Notes of Interest

Remember to have students write their names, the Church & VBS Year on the back of each craft for a lasting keepsake memory.

Divide up your materials ahead of time; preparation leads to smooth sailing during crafting adventures which ensures each table has the required amount of materials for a hassle-free crafting experience. Check the glue, make sure you have the right kinds of markers, and think ahead concerning clean up.

What do I wish for?  STICKERS!  Anyone who's ever taught can only imagine the convenience of church-provided stickers with the church logo and the child's name and age as well as the year on it.  It'd allow us to label everything effortlessly and add a personal touch to each craft.

Special Thanks and Shout Outs!

I owe a world of gratitude to my partner in crime, Kelli Carter, who joined me on this crafty adventure as our class teacher. Big thanks to our student helper, Catherine, and the incredible parents and children who made our VBS week at Burnt Hickory Baptist truly amazing. None of this would have been possible without the support of our church and the dedicated volunteers who made everything easy and fun. A special mention goes out to Jennifer LeCroy for her invaluable contributions, including the Wet-Wipe bottles and wood crosses. Saving items pays off!

And now, a twist to the tale: Should I become an Art Teacher? After all the joy I experienced while crafting with these wonderful children, a thought has entered my mind. Maybe, just maybe, I should consider embracing my artistic spirit and become an art teacher. Who knows? The twists and turns of life might lead me to an exciting new path filled with creativity and endless possibilities.

So, dear readers, as you venture forth on your own crafting journeys, remember to embrace the moments, make lasting memories, and let your imagination run wild. Craft on!
